When speaking of the great former players of the Detroit Red Wing organization, few demand the attention and respect afforded to the legend Alex Delvecchio. Aided by his mates Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay on the lauded Production Line, Delvecchio helped bring the Stanley Cup to Hockeytown in 1952, 1954 and 1955. It was some time around that third championship season that Alex began to wear the number 10 as seen here.Delvecchio wore the 17 and 15 sweater number during his first years with the team, settling for his famous 10 circa 1954. The beautiful white wool gamer has been manufactured by Tool Shop Sporting Goods and has tagging to that effect on the inside of the right seam, accompanied by a "48" size flap tag. This may very well be the first white sweater that Delvecchio ever wore with the 10 and is the earliest Delvecchio known to be offered in the hobby.Wear to this phenomenal garment is advanced, consisting of small holes found throughout the sleeves, upper verso, and lower front of the shirt. Many have been repaired by the team equipment manager, lending to the evidence of on-ice use. The club's famed winged wheel logo occupies the chest, while the "10" at verso has been applied in 10.5" red tackle twill numerals. Both the chest insignia and rear numerals exhibit the puckering normally associated with heavy on-ice wear. The area of the sleeves near each wrist has become toned from advanced use. Delvecchio has also signed the jersey's front in a black sharpie. One of the Red Wings famous retired numbers that currently hangs in the rafters at Joe Louis Arena, the 10 has come to stand for excellence in Hockeytown thanks to Delvecchio's solid contribution to the club that lasted well over two decades. Being that it is the earliest known exemplar of Delvecchio's sweater, this could very well be the most-sought number 10 Red Wings shirt in the hobby. Worn in the 1955 playoff run he enjoyed with Detroit, this garment was privy to the scoring tirade that saw Delvecchio put up seven goals and eight assists in that year's postseason. Outstanding shirt with a rich history, many Hall of Fame-level collectors will surely duke it out over this one. LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
