While the collection of available vintage hockey wool in the current auction is one of the greatest ever assembled for public sale, the doting collector will do well to pay the given example special attention as the extra notice is more than warranted. Exceptionally rare, this Montreal Maroons jersey is one of only four known in the hobby and only the third to ever hit the auction block. Originating from the 1934-35 season, this sweater was worn by Russ Blinco and is the brother to the famed Blinco Maroons shirt sold in an October 2006 sale at ClassicAuctions.net.This beauty exhibits the same bleeding of the maroon color in the "M" chest logo and in the stripes that plague the few Maroons jerseys that have been seen, however the overall appearance remains largely undiminished. Additionally, the only holes that remain unrepaired appear to be incurred during on-ice play and do not exhibit moth holes as would be expected in a wool garment of such advanced age. Four small holes populate the garment's front, with the most prominent just below and to the right of the chest insignia. A small hole also can be found in the rear of the left shoulder, with each sleeve also sporting an unrepaired hole. Team repairs are also found on each sleeve, with the jersey front exhibiting a couple repairs near the left seam. This fine relic has original tagging in the collar from Albion Knitting Co. in Peterboro, Ontario. The verso also includes a 7" tall "14" that has been affixed with wavy stitching. Despite the minor misgivings previously stated, the overall appearance of this exceptional museum-quality piece belies its age of well over 70 years. The story of the Maroons was action-packed and short, with the entire history of the celebrated franchise crammed into fourteen seasons between 1924 and 1938. The club immediately made a splash when they joined the NHL, winning Lord Stanley's Cup after just two seasons in the league. The city of Montreal was at the top of the hockey world, adding the upstart champions to a city already home to the vaunted Canadiens. The lines that divided the two teams were pretty clear in Montreal, with many of the Francophone fans following the Habs while the English-speakers were more often Maroons supporters. The coming of the Great Depression spelled imminent doom for the Maroons. A poor economy meant that the city could only support one team, and the Maroons were forced to suspend operations beginning with the 1938-39 campaign. This unfortunate story robbed a great organization from the city of Montreal, but this development created a dearth of the beautiful wools that are today prized gems in the hobby.A solid performer with the Maroons for the final five seasons of the franchise's existence, Russ Blinco wore the given shirt during his second year with the team for the 1934-35 season. That year was full of mixed emotions for the Maroons -- despite winning the club's second Stanley Cup the Maroons were in financial depths caused by the Great Depression and were well on the way to playing the franchise's final game. Blinco notched the game winner in Game 2 of the Finals, perhaps while he was wearing this exact shirt.Provenance is akin to the known Blinco previously sold as they both come from a Montreal collector who acquired them by way of Russ Blinco's widow. A serious crown jewel to any advanced collection, there is no guarantee that another of these fine wool Maroon jerseys will ever come up at public auction again. LOA from MeiGray. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
