Iconic, patriotic, historically important and rare, what we offer here amounts to one of the best-preserved exemplars of the New York Americans' sweater style used during the first half of the 1930s. The classic wool was worn during the 1932-33 campaign by the Amerks' Nick Wasnie, who racked up 11 goals and 12 assists that season.Regarded as one of the gem designs of its era, this remarkable wool sweater is boldly striped in the colors of the American flag and includes the beautiful touch of 13 white felt stars just beneath the collar on both the jersey front and reverse. Chest insignia consists of 1.5" white felt lettering reading "NEW YORK" above a 4.5" red-on-blue felt "AMERICANS". A 9.5" red-on-blue felt "15" has also been sewn to the verso. Manufactured by Alex Taylor & Co. in New York, the garment has the original tagging from the company in the tail. It cannot be stated enough how great the condition is here, with the only discernable flaws coming in the form of a pair of team repairs in the right shoulder area, a small unrepaired hole in the right elbow and the upper left portion of the verso "1" having come unstitched. Some very minor staining also appears in the waist striping as well as to one of the stars at verso.Founded by New York City prohibition-era bootlegger Bill Dwyer, the Americans suffered understandable struggles having to share Madison Square Garden with the Rangers. Add to that the end of Prohibition in the US in 1933 and it became difficult for Dwyer to pay his debts during the tough times that faced Depression-era America. All of these factors colluded to spell the end for the Amerks, who played their final game in 1942. While these developments were bad for Dwyer and his interests, it proved to be good for collectors, as it created exceptional demand for this rare and beautiful uniform design. Another Americans wool this nice may never come up for auction again.Originates from the estate of Kenny Wasnie, Nick's son, who in turn sold it to our consignor in the early 1990s. It's no mystery why the garment remains in such spectacular shape -- the sweater will come with photographs that show its prior storage situation. It was kept in a steamer trunk for 60 or so years until Wasnie's passing in 1991, indicating why it has almost entirely escaped the ravages of time. Some lucky collector will do well to boost the overall quality of his stash with this tremendous gem. LOA from MeiGray. Guide Value or Estimate: $25,000 - $30,000.Shipping: Clothing, Costumes & Jerseys (view shipping information)Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 100-110 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
