Baseball historians will forever argue the merits of Ruth, Cobb, Mays and DiMaggio in any discussion aimed at naming the greatest player of all time, but you'll find few who don't choose the fabled '27 Yankees as history's best ballclub. Featuring the Babe and his sixty homers, Gehrig and his MVP Award, and a supporting cast aptly dubbed "Murderer's Row," the team left only destruction in its wake, cruising to an easy four-game sweep over the powerful Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. Presented here is the glimmering prize for that exclamation point at the close of the 1927 season, presented to a front office figure affiliated with Miller Huggins' invincible juggernaut. A single faux diamond rests at center of the face, with "New York Yankees World Champions" ringing the perimeter. Soaring eagles decorate the shanks, each aloft above the year "1927." Interior of band was engraved many years later to our consignor, "To Bernie from the Higgins." Our consignor indicates that "the Higgins" were not the original recipients of the ring, and the identity of that person has been lost to history. We must note that the ten-karat gold construction of the ring does differentiate it from the fourteen-karat content of those issued at the time, suggesting that this could be a later incarnation. Several other ten karat player rings have surfaced in recent years, issued as replacements when the originals were lost or damaged. Make no mistake though--this is no mere "copy." There is no question but that this ring was crafted from the original mold--the detailing is brilliantly sharp and entirely flawless. We are fully confident that this is one of the officially made replacement rings crafted many decades ago.
