Please note a minor adjustment to the assertion that these clubs match the iron on display at the USGA Museum. The museum has informed us that the iron within their collection bears a registration number stamping (Reg. 1622) that the offered irons do not.The presented iron set was gifted to a young man in 1960 at Shady Oaks Country Club directly by links legend Ben Hogan. The young man was a close friend of a prominent member's son at Shady Oaks who, in turn, was a friend of Hogan. The two young men were at the Shady Oaks driving range when Hogan noticed the poor quality of clubs the member's friend was using. Hogan invited the young man to his locker and gave him a set of his irons. Hogan told him he would need to replace the grips, and he had them re-gripped at a local golf shop in Fort Worth, TX. The new owner informs us that he has probably played about ten rounds with the clubs, and really never took up golf. The owner has had the set in his possession for the last forty-seven years and has decided to sell due to his health concerns. He is now seventy-six years old. The iron set includes the eight clubs between 2 and 9. All but the 5 iron are stamped "MacGregor" on the sole, with the "Ben Hogan" signature in red on top and "Personal Model" stamped on the toe. The 5 iron is also stamped "MacGregor" on the sole, but features "Ben Hogan Pro-Iron" on the back. This iron set matches the famous MacGregor Ben Hogan Personal Model 1 iron on display at the USGA Museum. Hogan is recognized as the greatest ball striker ever to play the game. His nine career professional Major Championships tie him with Gary Player for fourth, trailing only Jack Nicklaus (18), Tiger Woods (15) and Walter Hagen (13).Ben Hogan was a staff member for MacGregor Golf Co. from 1938 through 1953, and almost all of Hogan's tournament victories came playing MacGregor equipment. It is worthy of note that only MacGregor staff players had "Personal Model" stamped on their irons, assuring usage by the player himself. Collectors can also refer to the lack of serial numbers as further proof that this is no production model set. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only offering of MacGregor Ben Hogan Personal Model irons ever to reach the auction block. As such, a singular opportunity for the advanced golf collector. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
