Description
1939 GU ALL STAR BASEBALL AUTO YANKEE STADIUM PSA Description FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER FOUND A DOCUMENTED BASEBALL FROM THIS HISTORIC GAME . AN UNBELIEVABLE FIND !!! The 2008 all star game is over , but the memories are still fresh . The last all-star game to be held at the house that Ruth built was only the 4th such event following the 1977 , 1960 and 1939 games. The memories of the 7th all star game in 1939 live on only in print and a very few documented artifacts . And with only two living members of that game , Feller and Fry , that are still around to tell the stories we look to items such as this baseball to take us back to that day of July 11th 1939. This Baseball tells the story of a young fans day at the game. From his obtaining this historical ball , to meeting the ball players at the team hotel and getting a couple of autographs as well. In vintage ink this baseball has many writtings on its panels . The sweet spot has the notation: "July 11th 1939 all star game" On another panel the fan was so proud of his "catch " he even signed and dated it !!!! following the notation : " this ball fouled in 1st base box by Bill Terry " caught by ( fans signature ) ( time) ? pm and the date 7/11/39 On another is the names of some of the players he met at the team hotel : " after game at Yankee Stadium met Luke Appling , Ted Lyons , Bob Feller + Roger Cramer at New Yorker hotel " Luke Appling and Ted Lyons autogrpahed this ball and is authenticated by PSA . Scan of letter is shown and comes with the baseball. Lastly the other notation on one panel is : "Winning P. --Feller -- , game Won by Amer League - 3 to 1 - " The ticket stub does not come with the ball. The following is a list of the players on the all star squads : The All-Star game reached new levels when it came to "The House That Ruth Built" in 1939. As expected American League manager Joe McCarthy started six of his hometown Yankees and let his "position" starters go the distance. He started Red Ruffing for three innings, then brought in Tommy Bridges and closed out with rookie, twenty-year-old Bob Feller. It was a powerful combination as each pitcher competed for the greatest curveball. Feller only gave up one hit in his 3 2/3 innings. Years later, he was asked if facing the best bats of the National League in his first All-Star Game made him nervous. He replied "I was never nervous on a pitching mound." Although it was a low scoring game, it represented one of the best "pitching clinics" ever put on at an All-Star event. Heavy hitters had dominated previous All-Star games, but this one proved that a quality bullpen could shut down even the most potent offense. 1939 All-Star Game National League 1 vs American League 3July 11, 1939 Yankee Stadium Hitting & Fielding Notes Name Pos AB R H RBI Stan Hack 3b 4 0 1 0 Lonny Frey 2b 4 0 1 1 Ival Goodman rf 1 0 0 0 c-Billy Herman ph 1 0 0 0 Terry Moore cf 1 0 0 0 Frank McCormick lf 4 0 0 0 Ernie Lombardi c 4 0 2 0 Joe Medwick lf 4 0 0 0 Mel Ott cf-rf 4 0 2 0 Arky Vaughan ss 3 1 1 0 Paul Derringer p 1 0 0 0 b-Dolph Camilli ph 1 0 0 0 Bill Lee p 0 0 0 0 d-Babe Phelps ph 1 0 0 0 Lou Fette p 0 0 0 0 e-Johnny Mize ph 1 0 0 0 Totals 34 1 7 1 Name Pos AB R H RBI Doc Cramer rf 4 0 1 0 Red Rolfe 3b 4 0 1 0 Joe DiMaggio cf 4 1 1 1 Bill Dickey c 3 1 0 0 Hank Greenberg 1b 3 1 1 0 Joe Cronin ss 4 0 1 0 George Selkirk lf 2 0 1 1 Joe Gordan 2b 4 0 0 0 Red Ruffing p 0 0 0 0 a-Myril Hoag ph 1 0 0 0 Tommy Bridges p 1 0 0 0 Bob Feller p 1 0 0 0 Totals 31 3 6 2 a: Struck out for Ruffing in 3rd inning.b: Struck out for Derringer in 4th inning.c: Struck out for Goodman in 5th inning.d: Grounded out for Lee in 7th inning.e: Struck out for Fette in 9th inning.
