In 1936 in New York at Yankee Stadium he was out boxed and smashed into submission by the Nazi's own former heavyweight champion Max Schmeling. Schmeling's decisive victory bolstered the Nazis claim of "Aryan superiority." Lewis had to carry the weight of that defeat until his rematch with Schmeling which came almost two years to the day later. Lewis destroyed Schmeling in the first round. Schmelling could only get off two meager punches before Lewis knocked him down 3 times and the fight was stopped by Schmeling's manager throwing in the towel.   The Lewis Schmeling fights are the THE MOST IMPORTANT sporting events in world history.
